(Heroic Bodies)… a film recounts the story of women’s suffering

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

Sarah Suleiman, the film director, said that “Heroic Bodies” is a long historical film that talks about the struggles of women through the female body, which has been suppressed by governments throughout history. Noting that the film documents this repression from 1900 until the 1970s.
She pointed out, during her intervention with Cairo News Channel, that the film shows how customs and traditions suppressed the body, explaining that she made sure that its title was Heroic Bodies, to liberate the word body, which there is still fear of in societies.
“Choosing the word ‘body’ must be in the film to liberate the word itself. In the film, women talk about their pain with full force. In some testimonies, one person spoke about her experience with circumcision, her suffering in marriage and childbirth, and how the circumcision process caused her psychological distress and distorted her organs.” She added.
“Heroic Bodies” is a documentary that uses examples from the reality of Sudan and highlights the suffering of Sudanese women. The most prominent issues discussed in the film are female genital mutilation and early marriage.
