Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, confirmed that the credit for his former assistant Enzo Maresca’s success as a head coach belongs solely to Maresca himself.
Guardiola will face Maresca head-to-head in his first match as Chelsea’s manager on Sunday.
City is looking to make the best possible start in their quest to extend their record and win the Premier League title for the fifth consecutive time when they visit Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Maresca contributed to City’s treble-winning season of the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League in the 2022-2023 season under Guardiola’s leadership. After winning the Championship title in his first season with Leicester City, the Italian coach took charge of Chelsea, succeeding Argentine Mauricio Pochettino last June.
Guardiola said on Saturday: “The work Enzo did at Leicester certainly belongs to him, his coaching staff, and his players.”
He added: “I have no influence on Leicester City’s return to the Premier League. I didn’t score any goals, I didn’t save any goals, I didn’t provide any ideas. I have said many times with my coaching staff that it’s not a one-way direction; it’s about the exchange of information.”
The Spanish coach explained: “I give information, but they give it to me as well, and I learn from them too. It’s about exchanging opinions.”
Guardiola concluded his remarks by saying: “It’s not just about what I say; it’s about a two-way exchange, and Leicester City’s success certainly belongs to him.”
