UN Official: Sudanese Women Face Risk of Sexual Violence and Displacement

Laila Baker, Regional Director of the UNFPA for Arab States, expressed grave concern about the tragic conditions faced by Sudanese women and girls amidst the ongoing conflict and its catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
Laila Baker is on a solidarity visit to Sudan to highlight the plight of Sudanese women suffering from the effects of a conflict described as “a war on women.”
According to “UN News” from Port Sudan, she visited a maternity hospital facing overcrowding and severe shortages in medical supplies. She praised the dedication of field workers despite the difficult circumstances.
Laila highlighted the efforts of the UNFPA and its partners in providing much-needed support but stressed the enormous number of people in need. She also shed light on the sexual violence faced by women due to displacement and conflict, emphasizing the importance of providing health and psychological care to survivors.
She urged the international community to double its efforts to achieve peace in Sudan, stressing that the Sudanese people deserve stability and international support to overcome this crisis.
