World Food Programme Explains Why It Provides Cash Aid to Certain Groups in Sudan

The UN’s World Food Programme announced that it reached approximately 5.8 million people with aid this year in Sudan, including 1.6 million individuals in the Darfur states and 666,000 in Khartoum and Gezira.

The program also provided cash assistance to 885,000 beneficiaries in September, the highest monthly figure since the conflict began.

Due to the difficulty of delivering aid, caused by the warring parties obstructing humanitarian operations, insecurity, poor roads, and damaged bridges due to floods and rain, the WFP resorted to providing cash assistance to the most vulnerable groups in Khartoum and parts of Darfur.

In the same context, the WFP revealed that it received a flexible contribution of $1.5 million from South Korea to provide food and nutrition aid to war-torn communities facing extreme hunger in Sudan. The WFP explained that South Korea’s support came at a critical time, as the conflict has triggered the world’s worst hunger crisis, and famine has been confirmed in parts of northern Darfur.

WFP Sudan Representative Eddie Rowe said that South Korea’s contribution will help save lives and prevent widespread famine and malnutrition. South Korea’s ambassador to Sudan, Namjung Hwan, added that severe hunger is widespread, and the Korean government has been providing consistent support to stand with the Sudanese people during these challenging times.
