China Confirms Reaching a Solution with India on the Disputed Border

The two countries have a history of accusing each other of trying to seize control of a narrow strip of disputed land.

China announced on Tuesday that it had reached a “solution” with India concerning issues related to their disputed borders, following an earlier statement from New Delhi that both sides had agreed on managing military patrols along the border.

In his regular press conference, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said: “Recently, China and India have maintained close contact through diplomatic and military channels regarding issues related to the Sino-Indian border. Currently, both sides have reached a solution on the related issues,” according to the French Press Agency (AFP).

The disputes between China and India involve mutual accusations of attempting to seize territory along a narrow strip of land known as the Line of Actual Control, which acts as a de facto border between the two nations.

Following a border skirmish in 2020, which resulted in the deaths of at least 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers, both sides withdrew tens of thousands of troops and agreed not to conduct patrols along the dividing line.

On Tuesday, Lin said that Beijing had “given its approval… In the next phase, we will work with India to properly implement this solution.”

However, Lin did not confirm whether this agreement paves the way for a formal meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the BRICS summit, hosted by Russia starting Tuesday.
