Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Ali Youssef, met with his Ethiopian counterpart, Gedion Timotheos, in Addis Ababa on Tuesday, with State Minister Mesganu Arga also in attendance.
The meeting focused on bilateral relations and exploring ways to enhance and develop them across various domains through existing agreements and their activation, serving the interests of the Sudanese and Ethiopian peoples and the broader regional community.
The discussions were described as fruitful and constructive, promising a positive impact on the future of bilateral and regional relations. Both sides stressed the importance of collaboration to ensure the region’s shared interests and stability.
The two parties agreed to convene the High Political Committee to bolster bilateral cooperation. They also discussed organizing joint committees for border states to facilitate trade and cross-border movement.
Additionally, Minister Youssef briefed his Ethiopian counterparts on Sudan’s current situation, highlighting the recent victories of the Sudanese Armed Forces over the RSF. He raised concerns about the presence of foreign mercenaries among RSF ranks and emphasized the need for regional cooperation to curb their influx and mitigate their threat.
The meeting also addressed the conditions of Sudanese nationals residing in or passing through Ethiopia, discussing measures to support their humanitarian needs. Minister Youssef expressed gratitude for Ethiopia’s previous waivers of residency fees for Sudanese citizens and requested further facilitation for Ethiopian workers returning to border areas to resume activities.
Ethiopia pledged to coordinate with its immigration authorities to extend waivers for Sudanese nationals. The discussions also explored opportunities for greater regional integration within the Horn of Africa to enhance shared economic benefits.
