Trump: I May Withdraw from NATO if Washington is Treated “Unfairly”
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump stated in an interview aired on Sunday that he would “definitely” consider withdrawing from NATO if allies do not “pay their dues.”
Speaking to NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump said: “They have to pay their bills.” He added that he would “absolutely” think about pulling the U.S. out of the alliance if members do not treat Washington “fairly,” according to the AFP.
Trump’s comments have raised concerns among NATO allies, as he has repeatedly criticized U.S. military aid to Kyiv, which has amounted to nearly $60 billion since the Russian invasion in February 2022. He had also criticized the alliance during his first term, emphasizing that every member state must meet its agreed-upon financial commitments.
