Sudan Events – Follow-ups
Hisham Dafa Allah Abdullah, Director of the Bank of Sudan and Deputy Head of the Currency Exchange Committee in Kassala State, confirmed that the currency exchange process started on Tuesday, December 10th, after completing all the arrangements made according to the Central Bank’s announcements.
He added in a press statement that the committee had formed several specialized subcommittees, including media, banking services, and currency destruction, all aimed at facilitating the exchange process.
Dafa Allah confirmed that the banking sector in the state was ready for the currency exchange.
He said, “Through the visits made by the High Committee to several banks in the state, we observed the dedication of the staff and the interaction of the citizens,” affirming that field visits would continue during the exchange period until December 23rd.
Dafa Allah emphasized that the exchange process requires considerable logistical preparation and human resources, which was achieved through the banking committee.
He announced that the bank was ready to receive the old currency notes being sent to the Central Bank and that it was fully prepared to meet the banks’ needs for the new 1,000-pound notes.
He further assured that the current currency exchange process is different from the previous ones in 2008 and 2011, as it is linked to the opening of bank accounts for all citizens, which is the ultimate goal to benefit from banking services and financial inclusion.
Dafa Allah noted that the process of opening bank accounts is progressing smoothly at all branches in the state and revealed that the daily withdrawal limit for clients is 200,000 pounds, alongside the activation of electronic payment technologies aimed at reducing the flow of cash outside the banking system.
He called on citizens to hurry in opening their bank accounts.
The Deputy Head of the Currency Exchange Committee in the state expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Kassala State Government for the security and logistical support, which contributed to the smooth progress of the currency exchange operations.
