Sudan Events – Follow-ups
On Friday, Sudan’s ambassador to Ethiopia, Al-Zein Ibrahim Hussein, presented his credentials to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, as Sudan’s representative to the regional organization.
Ambassador Al-Zein discussed the role of the African Union in Sudan and what it can do within the framework of the African solutions to African problems principle.
The meeting also covered the recent comments made by the Ugandan Chief of Defense Forces regarding Sudan. The ambassador urged the African Union to condemn these remarks due to their grave implications, especially considering that President Museveni is the head of the high-level committee of African Presidents tasked by the African Union Peace and Security Council with monitoring the Sudanese issue.
Al-Zein pointed to the continued and extensive external support for the Janjaweed militia, including weapons, ammunition, and mercenaries, and the African Union’s silence in condemning this. He called on the African Union to take a clear stance regarding the involvement of foreign mercenaries from many countries, including Colombia in Latin America, who are fighting alongside the Rapid Support Forces against the Sudanese people. He warned of the dangerous consequences of this phenomenon for the region’s security, peace, and stability across all of Africa.
