Prominent members of the US Congress submitted a memorandum to the outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration, urging swift actions to protect civilians in Sudan.
The memorandum called for tightening sanctions on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) due to their violations, which amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity during the ongoing conflict in the country since April 2023.
The memorandum stated that the grave violations committed by the RSF in Sudan have led to one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, necessitating swift American action through a “multilateral mechanism” to protect civilians and open humanitarian corridors to provide aid to millions of affected individuals.
It highlighted the severe deterioration of humanitarian conditions in the country, where over 25 million out of Sudan’s 48 million population face food insecurity, while the fighting has displaced nearly 12 million internally and over 3 million have fled to neighboring countries.
The memorandum emphasized the necessity of using all available means to ensure the protection of civilians and the delivery of humanitarian aid.
