Sudan Events – Agencies
Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef Al-Sharif revealed new details about Turkish mediation between the Sudanese government and the UAE. He stated that the coming days will witness practical steps to implement the mediation, including Turkey sending envoys to both countries to bridge differences, preceded by a visit from the Turkish Foreign Minister.
The minister disclosed a strong inclination within the Sudanese government to appoint a new prime minister. He indicated that Sudan’s reactivation in the African Union hinges on forming a civilian government and appointing a prime minister, adding, “We sensed a direction from the leadership to appoint a prime minister.”
Regarding relations with the UAE, the minister described them as strained due to its interference and support for militias. However, he emphasized that Sudan maintains excellent relations with all other Gulf countries.
On relations with the US and the West, the minister said the government is reviewing statements from the new US administration, noting a shift in tone compared to the previous administration. He revealed that the US plans to classify the RSF as a terrorist organization.
The minister admitted that Western countries and the US did not recognize the Sudanese government as legitimate after October 25, 2021, treating it as a de facto government. He pointed out that European countries regard Sudan as undergoing an abnormal situation, citing their reluctance to approve Sudanese ambassadorial nominations.
On the Russian naval base in Sudan, the minister clarified that it was agreed upon during the Bashir era, and Russia understands that parliamentary approval is required under normal circumstances. He emphasized, “The Russian naval base is not colonialism.”
