New Details about the Earthquake in Blue Nile
Sudan Events – Updates
The Geological Research Authority confirmed that seismic monitoring in the area surrounding the Roseires and Nahda dams showed tectonic activity, despite previous claims that the region was not tectonically active.
It is anticipated that this activity could have an impact on the region if moderate or strong tremors occur, attributing this to the large number of recorded earthquakes in the dam’s reservoir during the monitoring period.
The authority explained that the seismic activity in the Roseires Dam reservoir aligns with the hypothesis of tectonic seismic behavior in the region, known as reservoir-induced earthquakes, where artificial lakes cause changes in the tectonic environment, fault systems, and groundwater pressure.
The authority revealed that an earthquake occurred in the middle of the night on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
It also mentioned that the Rapid Support Forces militia destroyed the Sudanese Seismic Network center in Khartoum and looted several monitoring stations across the states. Efforts are underway to establish an alternative seismic center in Port Sudan.
