Guterres: Humanity Has Unleashed ‘Evils’

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said Wednesday that humanity has “unleashed all the evils,” referencing “out-of-control technologies,” existential threats, wars, and climate change, according to AFP.
Guterres remarked: “Yes, there is progress in our troubled world,” citing a ceasefire in Lebanon and unprecedented advances in renewable energy. However, while presenting his priorities for 2025 to the General Assembly, he added, “Let us not delude ourselves—this is indeed a deeply troubled world.”
He noted four major challenges: “accelerating conflicts, pervasive inequality, the glaring climate crisis, and runaway technologies,” describing them as threats capable of either disrupting all policies or, at worst, overturning human existence.
He concluded by emphasizing that humanity has the tools to address these challenges, stating, “We don’t need to reinvent the wheel; we just need to get it rolling.”
