Meningitis Risk Assessment Workshop Continues

For the third consecutive day, the Meningitis Risk Assessment Workshop continued at the Al-Reeh Al-Turifi Hall in Kassala city. The event is organized by Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health, represented by the General Directorates of Primary Health Care and Emergency and Epidemic Control, in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) regional offices for the Eastern Mediterranean, Africa, and the Sudan country office.

National immunization expert Samira Mohamed Othman stated in a press release that the experts presented the experiences of countries that had previously tackled meningitis outbreaks, such as Nigeria, Chad, Ethiopia, and South Sudan. These countries emphasized the importance of identifying high-risk areas to carry out targeted vaccination campaigns using the pentavalent meningitis vaccine before expanding it nationwide. She highlighted that the vaccine plays a crucial role in reducing both morbidity and mortality across all types of meningitis.

Othman also noted that participants were divided into groups to better achieve workshop objectives. These included: surveillance and epidemiology, laboratory work, immunization, and lastly, camps and hard-to-reach areas. She confirmed that all participating cadres had been trained accordingly.
