Sudan cruised to a resounding 4–0 victory over Nigeria on Tuesday in the second round of Group D matches at the 8th African Nations Championship, jointly hosted by Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.
The Sudanese side opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Nigeria’s Leonard Ngeng put the ball into his own net. Waleed Al-Din Khidr doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 44th minute of the match, played on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania.
In the second half, Abdelraouf Yaqoub netted twice in quick succession, striking in the 55th and 62nd minutes to seal the emphatic win.
The result lifted Sudan to the top of the group with four points, edging Senegal on goal difference after the defending champions were held to a hard-fought 1–1 draw with Congo earlier in the day.
For Nigeria, the heavy defeat marked the end of their campaign, leaving them pointless at the foot of the table behind third-placed Congo, who have two points.
Qualification from the group will be decided in the final round next Tuesday, with Nigeria facing Congo, while Sudan take on Senegal in a decisive clash.
