African Union Plans Key Meeting on Sudan

African diplomatic sources revealed that the African Union (AU) is preparing to convene a broad meeting in October to discuss ways to end the war in Sudan, now in its third year and responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths and millions of displaced people.

The sources told Asharq that the AU has held consultations in recent weeks with key Sudanese political groups, including the “Sumud” coalition led by former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and the Democratic Bloc. The move seeks to pave the way for an inclusive political process after earlier regional and international mediation efforts stalled.

The meeting, scheduled for Addis Ababa, will bring together a wide range of civilian and political actors, to be followed by a separate session involving the warring military factions—the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF—once logistical and political arrangements are finalized.
