African Union and Egypt Exchange Views on Sudan Crisis

The African Union and Egypt on Tuesday exchanged views on the political and security situation in Sudan. Discussions also covered developments in Libya, South Sudan, and the wider Horn of Africa region, particularly Somalia.

AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aaty met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, agreeing on the importance of mobilizing resources for the AU’s new mission in Somalia.

On water security, the Egyptian Foreign Minister reiterated the need for cooperation in line with international law to safeguard the interests of all Nile Basin states. He reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of unilateral measures that contravene international law in the Eastern Nile Basin, emphasizing that Egypt will take all necessary steps under international law to protect its water security, describing the Nile as an existential issue for the country.
