Plans Underway to Purchase New Vessels
The Director of Sudan Shipping Lines, Omar Khalifa, unveiled an ambitious plan aimed at restoring the strategic role of the national maritime carrier through three high-value projects: passenger transport, petroleum and gas transport, and livestock transport.
Khalifa explained that the projects are designed to revive the national carrier to better serve citizens and support the national economy.
Minister of State for Finance Mohamed Abdel-Daeim stressed the crucial importance of revitalizing the maritime lines as a national carrier, noting that its role extends beyond transport to becoming a key partner in development efforts.
Khalifa highlighted that the company’s absence from maritime operations in recent years has significantly increased transportation costs for both the state and citizens. He noted, however, that the company still possesses valuable assets—including a sizable number of containers and an 87,500-square-meter container yard.
He added that the maritime lines once served as a major source of foreign currency and offered specialized advisory services in shipping and export. Khalifa called on the Minister of Finance to provide the funding necessary to acquire modern vessels for transporting passengers, cargo, and livestock, in order to implement the company’s proposed roadmap.
