Algeria Calls for African Solutions to the Sudan War

Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf stated that the war in Sudan, now approaching its third year, has caused one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.

Speaking at the 12th edition of the “Oran Track” on Peace and Security in Africa at the International Conference Center in Algeria, Attaf noted that the ongoing conflict has inflicted immense suffering on the Sudanese people, with no clear political solution in sight.

He added that the situation reflects declining international attention to African peace and security issues, complicating the continent’s ability to manage internal conflicts. The minister emphasized that the absence of effective African initiatives has allowed external interventions to grow, hindering the chances of a peaceful settlement.

Attaf stressed the importance of strengthening African diplomatic roles, noting that sustainable solutions to crises like Sudan’s must originate from the continent itself, with international support where necessary, to ensure effective implementation. He highlighted that an African-led approach to mediation can reduce conflict escalation, restore security, and alleviate civilian suffering, promoting regional stability.
