UN Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed regret over the White House’s announcement that the United States intends to withdraw from several United Nations bodies.
In a press statement, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said: “Assessed contributions to the UN’s regular budget and peacekeeping budget, as approved by the General Assembly, constitute a legal obligation for all Member States, including the United States.”
He added that all UN bodies will continue to carry out the mandates entrusted to them by Member States, emphasizing that the organization bears responsibility toward all those who depend on it and will continue its work with determination.
The United States announced that it would take “immediate steps” to withdraw from dozens of international organizations, including 31 UN agencies and offices.
