Jibril: Militias Do Not Recognize the Value of Sudanese Antiquities

Sudan’s Minister of Finance and National Economy, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, emphasized the importance of recovering all Sudanese antiquities looted during the war instigated by rebel militias, stressing the need for a comprehensive inventory of all plundered artifacts and treasures.

He stated that the Rapid Support Forces militias demonstrated a profound ignorance of the value of Sudan’s heritage, noting that their looting activities aim to erase the country’s historical and cultural identity.

Addressing a ceremony in Port Sudan organized by the Ministry of Culture, Information, and Tourism to mark the recovery of 570 artifacts, Jibril called for a nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the importance of protecting antiquities, describing them as a mirror of the nation’s history and civilization.

The minister highlighted the need to form a committee of relevant authorities to tour all Sudanese states to collect and reclaim looted artifacts, while also appealing to neighboring countries to support Sudan in restoring its cultural possessions.

Jibril affirmed that the ceremony marking the return of hundreds of artifacts is a significant event, as the items represent Sudan’s history, identity, and civilization, adding that those who stole them intended to erase Sudan’s heritage and distort its civilization.
