Guterres’ Envoy Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Ceasefire Efforts in Sudan

The Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met on Wednesday with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Pekka Haavisto, in the presence of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohieddin Salem.

The meeting reviewed the overall situation in the country, as well as ongoing efforts to strengthen security and stability and achieve comprehensive peace.

For his part, UN envoy Haavisto expressed his pleasure at meeting the Sovereignty Council chairman, reiterating his commitment to supporting efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire and finding a peaceful, lasting, and sustainable resolution to the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

He stressed the critical importance of adopting dialogue and de-escalation as essential steps toward a comprehensive cessation of hostilities, underscoring the need to continue engaging in tracks that prioritize the protection of civilians and to explore confidence-building measures that could help create conditions conducive to meaningful progress.

Haavisto said the United Nations remains fully engaged with all relevant stakeholders to promote peace and stability and deliver humanitarian assistance across the country, noting that his current visit represents an important opportunity to hear directly from key political and civilian actors.

He also affirmed the commitment of the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General to Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, describing it as fundamental. He added that the United Nations stands firmly with the Sudanese people and remains committed to working alongside international partners to support serious steps toward ending the fighting and charting a path toward lasting peace through inclusive and genuine dialogue.
