A high-level technical delegation from the African Union Commission is expected to visit Sudan in the coming days to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the African Union office in the country, in addition to holding key meetings with a number of government officials.
According to a senior diplomatic source speaking to the Al-Muhaqqiq news website, the African Union has proposed April 5 as the date for the visit. The delegation will be headed by Mohamed Belaiche, Special Envoy of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and head of the African Union Coordination Office in Khartoum, and will include several officials from different departments within the organization.
The African Union had previously closed its office in Khartoum following the events of October 25, 2021, after which Sudan’s membership was suspended on the grounds that the developments constituted an unconstitutional change of government.
Sudan, however, has described the African Union’s decision as biased and an excessive interpretation of its principles, arguing that the developments represented the dissolution of a partnership between two transitional parties rather than the overthrow of an elected government.
