Washington: Committed to Achieving Lasting Peace in Sudan

The United States has issued what it described as an appeal on the occasion of “the third anniversary of the outbreak of the devastating civil war in Sudan between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces militia.” In the statement, it said that the parties to the conflict must implement a ceasefire without preconditions, and that external parties fueling the conflict by supplying weapons must stop doing so. It also stated that it will impose sanctions on a number of individuals and entities involved in supplying these weapons.

A statement from the U.S. State Department said that “the Trump administration is imposing sanctions on five individuals and entities responsible for fueling this conflict, which has caused the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.” The statement noted that since April 2023, more than 150,000 people have been killed, more than 14 million displaced, and famine conditions persist in areas affected by the conflict.

The State Department added that the war in Sudan “further destabilizes an already fragile region, creating opportunities for terrorist groups that threaten U.S. interests and regional security.”

The statement affirmed that the Trump administration remains committed to achieving lasting peace in Sudan, as reflected in the United States providing $20 million in emergency food assistance in March, and an additional $200 million recently pledged during a call to action hosted by the United States for the Sudan Humanitarian Fund in February.

The statement added: “The United States calls on both the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces to accept an immediate humanitarian truce for three months without preconditions. Such a truce would enable vital humanitarian aid to reach those in need, protect civilians, and create space for negotiations aimed at a permanent ceasefire. The United States will continue to escalate its measures against those who fuel the conflict in Sudan.”
