On Sunday, the Committee for the Transfer of the “Battle of Dignity” remains in Khartoum locality, in coordination with the Forensic Medicine Authority, resumed the exhumation and relocation of war remains from the central bus station and the Jabra area in the southern part of the locality.
The operations resulted in the transfer of 93 remains to main cemeteries, including the exhumation of 87 graves in Jabra Block 18 and 6 graves within the central station.
The Executive Director of the locality, Abdel Moneim Al-Bashir, confirmed—following his inspection of the exhumation sites—that the work is being carried out in line with directives from the Higher Committee for Preparing the Environment for the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State. He explained that the committee’s work at the locality level falls within the framework of relocating and reburying the remains from emergency burial sites—used by residents during the war in neighborhoods, markets, and public areas—to officially designated cemeteries, in coordination with forensic authorities.
He noted that the transfer operations were conducted after completing all legal procedures, including filing reports, notifying families of the deceased of the exhumation and transfer schedules, and burying unidentified remains in cemeteries.
He added that the transfer of remains will continue across all administrative units until all targeted numbers and locations are completed before the rainy season, according to the inventory conducted by the competent committee and neighborhood service committees.
He further indicated that priority is being given to residential areas, schools, public squares, mosques, markets, main roads, and densely populated areas, before moving on to other locations. He called on neighborhood service committees and residents in targeted areas to support the committee’s efforts by assisting in exhumation operations, being present with field teams, and providing necessary information.
He also praised the performance of the Committee for the Transfer of the “Battle of Dignity” remains since the liberation of Khartoum, commending its rapid response in transferring bodies and remains and ensuring dignified burials.
