Warnings of Further Deterioration of the Sudanese Pound

Economic experts have warned of negative repercussions from banning essential goods.

Economist Professor Mustafa Nuwari stressed that the Sudanese pound will not stabilize through such bans, emphasizing that conditions are likely to worsen.

In remarks made in the “Our Economy” group, Nuwari said that amid the ongoing deterioration, the pound will not maintain its value under this decision but will instead decline further.

He added that it would have been more effective to carefully increase customs duties on selected goods, based on a detailed analysis of import schedules—numbering in the thousands but grouped into categories—warning that “the danger lies in raising tariffs on entire categories instead of targeting specific goods.”
