Darfur Regional Governor Minni Arko Minnawi said the Sudanese government and political forces supporting the state have neither closed the door to dialogue nor rejected the principle of negotiations and achieving peace, stressing that sustainable peace is the only option for ending the suffering of the Sudanese people.
Speaking during his current visit to South Sudan, Minnawi said, according to Asharq, that his moves among neighboring countries were aimed at clarifying Sudan’s position amid what he described as a “highly complex crisis,” while rejecting what he called attempts to create the impression that the government is opposed to dialogue.
He stressed that the desired peace must be “genuine and just,” address the root causes of the crisis, and preserve Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and independent decision-making. He added that peace “cannot be built on surrender or on legitimizing a reality imposed by war.”
Minnawi said he also discussed during the visit the conditions of Sudanese refugees and members of the Sudanese community, as well as the challenges they face, in addition to ways of coordinating a safe, voluntary, and dignified return to Sudan.
He affirmed that he would continue his efforts to clarify Sudan’s position to neighboring countries and the international community, warning against attempts by various parties and countries to interfere in Sudanese affairs and reshape the political landscape to serve their own agendas.
Minnawi said: “We are for peace, dialogue, and a political solution, but we want peace that preserves Sudan rather than divides it, and brings Sudanese people together rather than entrenching their divisions.”
