European Union: 31,000 Sudanese Nationals Applied for Asylum Over 17 Months

The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) revealed on Wednesday that approximately 31,000 Sudanese nationals had applied for asylum in European Union countries over a period of 17 months, with 11,000 applications still awaiting a decision.

In a report, the agency said that “Sudanese nationals submitted approximately 31,000 asylum applications in European Union countries and countries associated with the EU asylum system between March 2025 and August 2026.”

The report explained that Greece and France received more than three-quarters of the applications submitted, with 13,000 applications in Greece and 11,000 in France.

It noted that EU member states and associated countries issued approximately 20,000 first-instance decisions on asylum applications submitted by Sudanese nationals. Greece and France topped the list in terms of the number of decisions, with 8,000 in Greece and 7,900 in France.

According to the report, as of early August 2026, more than 11,000 asylum applications submitted by Sudanese nationals were still awaiting first-instance decisions, including approximately 5,400 applications in Greece.

The agency stated that asylum applications from Sudanese nationals began to rise following the outbreak of the war in April 2023, before increasing sharply in 2025.

It added that the upward trend continued during the first eight months of 2026, when approximately 15,000 applications were submitted, representing an increase of nearly two-thirds compared with the same period in 2025.
