Santos Relegated to Second Division

Santos, the former club of the late Brazilian jewel Pele, was relegated to the second division in the Brazilian league for the first time in its 111-year history, after losing in the last round of the league to Fortaleza (2-1).
After Santos’ relegation to the second division, there are only two clubs that have not previously been relegated in Brazil: Sao Paulo and Flamingo.

Santos would have remained in the first division if they tied the match, and Vasco da Gama’s draw against Bragantino continued.
Santos, the eight-time defending champion, who lost at home to Fortaleza 1-2, was the one with the ill-fated card in the end, less than a year after the passing of its former legend Pele, who won the World Cup title three times with his country in the mid of 20th century.
