Foreign Policy: Biden Pressured over Sudan war

Agencies – Sudan Events

A report published by Foreign Policy Magazine on Friday confirmed that American lawmakers are pressing to correct the war situation in the Sudan and limit the accompanying atrocities, indicating that these efforts include a message to the UAE.
Legislators are putting pressure on President Joe Biden administration to take a more assertive approach towards the war in Sudan, particularly with the continued violent fighting and growing chaos after the “failure” of mediation efforts to stop the conflict, according to the magazine.
The war that broke out in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April led to the displacement of 7.1 million people, according to what the United Nations announced on Thursday, describing it as “the largest displacement crisis in the world.”
Stephan Dujarric, spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, said that the recent battles in the center of the country forced 300,000 people to flee, and “these new operations raise the number of displaced people to 7.1 million,” including 1.5 million who took refuge in neighboring countries, according to Agence France-Presse.
Senators call on the US administration to appoint a new special envoy to Sudan, with the aim of breathing “new life into US policy on the conflict,” which has been overshadowed by other conflicts taking place in Europe and the Middle East.
Attention is turning to Tom Perriello, a former Democratic congressman and diplomat in the administration of former US President Barack Obama, to fill the position of US special envoy to Sudan.
There are still consultations about the powers of this envoy, and whether he will submit his reports directly to the US President or to the Secretary of State, as the legislators want a high-level envoy with broad powers, according to the report.
Perriello did not respond to Foreign Policy’s inquiries about the matter.
The UAE’s support for the RSF arouses the anger of the US Congress, and a group of lawmakers took the unusual step of sending a direct letter to the UAE Foreign Minister condemning support for the RSF, warning that this could harm US-Emirati relations, according to a copy of the letter seen by Foreign Policy.
A US State Department spokesman told the magazine: “We have directly raised our concerns with Emirati officials regarding reports of the UAE’s support for the RSF. We have made clear our view that providing weapons to either side will only deepen the conflict.”
