Speaking to Al Jazeera Net, Yasser expressed his belief that Egypt and Sudan are the weaker party now, while Ethiopia is the stronger party in the tripartite negotiations, and therefore Addis Ababa adopts more stubbon positions as the upstream country, and is able to limit Egypt’s attempts to impose its conditions from construction to filling and finally operation.
Al-Hussein considered that Egypt’s options are limited to push Ethiopia to cooperate on technical issues, particularly since the exacerbation of water scarcity problems undermines Egypt’s regional power, as it has long considered the Nile River a source of strength and life.
Al-Hussein said, “I do not think that the military option was one of the options at any stage of the negotiations that ended in failure, and the only option remains the negotiating path and solutions resulting from political pressure.”
