UN Secretary-General Guterres condemns ‘collective punishment’ of Palestinians

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in the Israel-Gaza war.
Speaking in Beijing just hours after the bombing of the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, for which many world leaders have condemned the attack, Guterres said that Hamas “attacks cannot justify the collective punishment of the Palestinian people”.
It was to be a centrepiece of United States President Joe Biden’s visit to the Middle East on Wednesday: a trip to Jordan to meet a range of Arab leaders amid Israel’s constant bombing of the Gaza Strip. But on Tuesday, Jordan cancelled that summit after an explosion at the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City killed at least 500 people and sparked global outrage.
