UN Peacekeepers Pullout from Northern Mali Camp
Sudan Events – Sumaya Sayed
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) statement said the pullout was completed “in an extremely tense and degraded security context, putting in danger the lives of personnel”.
The Malian army said it took over the Tessalit camp on Saturday. It is the first handover in the sensitive Kidal region, where clashes with armed groups have flared.
Before Tessalit, MINUSMA had transferred five other camps to the Malian authorities since August.
The separatists do not want the camps returned to the Malian army, saying it would contradict the ceasefire and peace deals struck with Bamako in 2014 and 2015.
