Resumption Studies in Sudan: Concerns of IDPs and Challenges of Teachers

Since last April 15, it has been no longer possible for school and university students in several Sudanese states to return to education classrooms after war broke out between the Sudanese army and the dissolved Rapid Support Forces RSF.
The movement of citizens from Khartoum State to the River Nile, Northern, Gezira, Sennar, White Nile, Blue Nile, Gedaref, Kassala and Red Sea stated has turned schools and university dormitories into shelter centers for thousands of displaced people fleeing the hell of war.

The United Nations UN Integrated Transition Support Mission in Sudan, UNTAMS, said that thousands have been killed since the outbreak of fighting in Sudan last April, and more than 5.7 million people were forced to leave their homes, and 25 million, or more than half of the population, are in need of humanitarian aid.

In addition, teachers’ salaries have stopped, in addition to the effects of the war reaching families whose source of livelihood has been cut off after daily life has been disrupted for a period of time that requires other arrangements.
However, this reality did not prevent some states from forming committees to study the resumption of school, and Gedaref State evacuated an interior used to shelter displaced persons in order to start school.
The displaced people’s fears of being expelled from schools were reinforced
They live in them as shelter centers in light of the failure of the organizations to carry out their tasks of providing camps.
A number of them interviewed by the Sudan Event website complained about the lack of financial capacity to enable them to send their children to schools or universities.

It is no secret that the military escalation carried out by the dissolved Rapid Support Forces in the states of Darfur and their seizure of major cities prevents the resumption of studies.

Nile River School resumes
Ismail Al-Azhari Al-Bushra, Director General of the Ministry of Education in the Nile River State, the Minister-designate, said that the Ministry had disbursed the August salary to teachers.

He pointed out that applications have been opened for expatriate teachers wishing to be accommodated to teach in the state’s schools (cooperating).

The Minister also reiterated that schools will open in all seven localities of the state, without exception, to stabilize the security situation throughout the Nile River State.

Al-Azhari called on parents, families, and students to make efforts and cooperate with school administrations so that everyone can complete this academic year.

The Gezira state is reserved
The greatest impact of the war appears to be on Gezira State, and the state’s Minister of Culture and Information, Al-Hadi Bob, told Sudan Event that the state government has formed a committee on resuming studies and submitting it to the state Council of Ministers.
He pointed to the challenges that prevent the resumption of studies.

South Kordofan approves a vision for the academic year

The Council of Ministers of the Government of South Kordofan, headed by Governor Muhammad Ibrahim Abdel Karim, approved the report of the Ministry of Education and Guidance in the state on the technical vision of the Federal Council of Ministers’ decision to open schools, in addition to the progress of the plan to establish the intermediate stage. In the state.

The Secretary-General of the Government and spokesman for the Council, Abdullah Abdul Razzaq Ismail, confirmed that the Council, after extensive deliberations and discussion, approved the technical vision of the Ministry of Education regarding the beginning of the new academic year.

He said: “The current circumstances do not allow schools to open due to a number of challenges in light of war and instability, in addition to challenges related to the school environment, including furniture, textbooks, and the benefits of teachers and workers in the field of education.”

The Director General of the Ministry of Education and Guidance in the state, Amal Idris, also indicated that the year 2024, according to the ministry’s plan, is a year for establishing the middle stage, accompanied by the participation of the people of the state at home and abroad in the education sector in the state.

Amal announced that the technical vision of the Ministry and the decision of the Federal Council of Ministers regarding the new academic year, which was approved by the Council at its session, that the state’s conditions are not suitable for announcing the beginning of the academic year, and the vision will be submitted to the competent authorities and security agencies as efforts continue in this regard after creating the appropriate conditions to announce the opening of schools and Overcoming all obstacles and challenges caused by the current war so that the educational process returns to its previous state.

Regarding the directives of the Federal Council of Ministers regarding submitting a report on the resumption of the school year in the safe states.

The meeting reviewed the obstacles to resuming studies, represented by the continuation of the war in Khartoum State, and that many schools have been converted into shelter areas, and most of the teachers are outside the state.

Based on these data, Khartoum State decided that studies could not resume until after the end of the war.
