Delegation to New York on UNITAMS
Sudan Events -Follow-ups
Sudanese government has dispatched an official delegation headed by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Dafallah Al-Haj Ali, to New York to lead discussions with the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and concerned parties to the UN on Sudan’s request to end the mission of UNITAMS.
Al-Sudani newspaper said on Monday that Sudan submitted an official letter on the 11th of November, requesting the end of UNITAMS to the Sudan. The mandate of the mission expires on December the 3rd.
According to information obtained by the newspaper, Khartoum is depending on the request to end the UNITAMS mission on the changes that happened after the outbreak of war on last 15 April, so its mission to achieve the civil transition process has ended. Furthermore, the mission is working in accordance with Article 6, and is not imposed on the Sudan under Article 7 as the UNAMID mission, thus it is within Khartoum’s right, to reject it.
The relationship between the mission – which arrived in Sudan at the request of former Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdouk – and the government became tense, especially after the outbreak of war, as the government accused the German national, head of the mission, Volker Perthes of siding with political forces allied with the Rapid Support, and later considered him a persona non grate, which prompted him to submit his resignation in September.
Since August, after the collapse of the security situation as a result of the war, UNITAMS transferred its activities to Nairobi, Kenya
