“Daughters of Olfa” Best Tunisia Film at Gutham Independent Movie

The Tunisian film “Four Daughters”, directed by Kaouther Ben Hania, won the Gotham Award as best documentary in the annual competition dedicated to independent cinema. The Gotham Film and Media Institute announced the names of the winners of the 33rd edition awards at a ceremony held in New York City on Monday evening, November 27th.
The victory of “Daughters of Olfa” came after a strong competition with four films: “OurBody” by director Claire Simon, “Against The Tide” by director Sarvink Kaur, and “Apolonia, Apolonia” by director Sarvink Kaur. Lea Globe, and “20Days In Mariupol” directed by Mstislav Chernov.
The winning film participated in the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and won many awards at the festival, including the “Golden Eye” award, which goes to documentary films, and the “Positive Cinema” award, which is given to the most positive feature film on the list of films nominated in the official competition of the Cannes Festival. A special mention from the Critic François Chalet Committee, which is presented by the François Chalet Society on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival.
The film represents Tunisia at the Academy Awards in the category of Best Non-English Language Film at the awards ceremony, that is scheduled to be held in March 2024. It is the second film by the Tunisian director to be nominated for the Oscar, as her film “The Man Who Sold His Back” was previously nominated and made it to the list. The short received Oscar nominations after also winning many international awards.
In her work, Kawthar Ben Hania mixed documentary and fiction, presenting a true story that happened to a Tunisian woman named Olfa, who has four daughters. Her life changes after two of her daughters disappear, and she later discovers their involvement with terrorist groups.q
