IGAD to Mobilize Support for Jeddah Agreement

IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu said that the Horn of Africa region stands at a critical juncture, as the ongoing conflict in Sudan casts a shadow on aspirations of the region to achieve peace and prosperity in the greater Horn of Africa region.
Workneh added in his opening statement at the 41st IGAD emergency summit, which was started today, Saturday, in Djibouti, to discuss the Sudan crisis, that civilians in Sudan are bearing the impact of this prolonged conflict, and it is the moral duty of the region’s leaders to accelerate the implementation of the partial decisions of the Jeddah Agreement, which was co-facilitated by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America.
He called for the mobilization of the necessary political and diplomatic support for its implementation as well as calling on countries to play a decisive role in reaching a peaceful solution to the hostilities in Sudan.
In his opening statement, the IGAD Secretary stressed that peaceful and respectful dialogue remains the cornerstone of their approach, and through continued efforts in this direction, can the region pave the way for lasting peace in the Sudan.
He said as African official the IGAD leaders must insist on immediately reaching a ceasefire agreement and silencing the weapons that have caused turmoil on the lives of innocent civilians, their brothers and sisters in the Sudan.
