The United States of America said that it continues to stand by the people of Sudan and work to end the ongoing conflict so that next year the Sudanese people can begin to achieve the peace, security, and prosperity they deserve.
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken indicated in a statement on Sudan’s Independence Day Anniversary on Monday that as we begin a new year and celebrate the sixty-eighth anniversary of Sudan’s independence, we think of the ongoing suffering of the Sudanese people due to the needless conflict between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Blinken added that this conflict has led to war crimes, crimes against humanity, ethnic cleansing, serious food insecurity, large-scale displacement, and the collapse of the health care system. This has also seriously deepened divisions in Sudan along ethnic, tribal, and regional lines.
Anthony mentioned in the statement that a year ago that they welcomed the political process and joined the Sudanese people in the hope that they would be able to restore their democratic transition, and now Sudan is suffering from one of the largest humanitarian crises and the largest displacement crisis in the world due to the decisions of the warring parties, noting that the economy and infrastructure in Sudan are in a state of devastation. Many women and girls have been raped or lived in terror of sexual violence amidst chaos and impunity. The RSF and Sudanese Armed Forces must end this brutal war and return rule to civilians, as the Sudanese people have long demanded.
