5th Renaissance Dam Filling, Due

Ethiopia has announced a new measure with the Renaissance Dam that paves the way for the start of the 5th filling stage.
Satellite images taken yesterday, Thursday, have shown that Ethiopia has begun the process of raising the Renaissance Dam across the Middle Corridor, and pouring concrete after it dried.
It also showed the presence of two excavators working for the first time above the central corridor, perhaps for the purpose of making joints or connections with the new concrete.
In turn, Egyptian expert Abbas Sharaqi confirmed to Al Arabiya.net that the dam’s water stopped flowing above the middle corridor on December 15, as the corridor dried up completely after the two drainage gates were opened and the two turbines failed to operate.
He pointed out that the water reserve in the dam lake decreased by more than one billion cubic meter, so that the total storage is currently less than 40 billion cubic meters.
The new Ethiopian action comes a few days after the failure of the 4th round negotiations between the three countries regarding the dam, when the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation announced the end of the meeting without reaching any agreement because, it argued, the continuation of the same Ethiopian position that refuses during the past years to adopt any of the technical compromise and legal solutions that would secure the interests of the three countries.
