Sudan: Officially Freezing Activities within IGAD

The President of the Transitional Sovereign Council (TSC), Lieutenant General Abdul Fattah Al-Burhan Abdul Rahman, has officially informed the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) that Sudan is freezing its activities within the authority

The Sudan also informed the east African organization that the government of Sudan is not obligated and is not concerned about what the organization adopts vis-a-vis the Sudanese affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in a press statement Saturday that Al-Burhan has sent a written letter this morning to the President of the Republic of Djibouti, current IGAD Chair Ismail Omar Guelleh informing him of the decision of the Government of Sudan to freeze its membership within IGAD.

The Ministry said that the decision came as a result of the IGAD’s disregards for Sudan’s decision, which was officially conveyed to it, to stop its dealing in and freeze dealings in any issues related to the current situation in Sudan.

It added that an item on Sudan was included in agenda of the forty-second extraordinary summit of heads of state and government, which was held on Thursday, January 18, in the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

Sudan boycotted it, and but still IGAD Summit’s final communiqué contained phrases that violate Sudan’s sovereignty and provoke the feelings of the families and victims of atrocities committed by the rebel militia.

The letter clarified that the Government of Sudan is not committed nor concerned with anything issued by IGAD regarding Sudanese affairs.
