Bashaer Hospital Closed Due to Militia harassments

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

Janoub Al-Hizam Emergency Committee in the capital, Khartoum, has confirmed the continuation of the strike at Bashaer University Hospital, which was closed in protest against the attacks of the Rapid Support Militia, while warning against the impact of the closure that will deprive thousands of medical treatment and medicinal care.

Yesterday (Monday), the Committee , the hospital administration, and Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced the closure of all sections, except for the kidneys, in order to preserve the safety of the medical staff, patients, and hospital visitors, and to ensure that the hospital continues to operate normally, and to preserve the rights of the medical staff stationed at the hospital.

The decision came after a group of three members of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)militias on a motorcycle opened fire in the air on Sunday evening for the purpose of intimidation, within the hospital campus. They refused to comply with the orders of the hospital guards and the demands of the medical staff to remove the weapon and the motorcycle. It noted that the incident was repeated at the beginning of the year. Last December, there was a strike in the hospital.

Janoub Al-Hizam Emergency Committee said in a statement today (Tuesday) that Bashaer Hospital received (5,445) patients this January, including 583 critical cases from gunshot wounds and projectiles, and 4,849 cold cases in the internal medicine, women’s and obstetrics departments, 418 of which were children, while the Hospital recorded 13 deaths.

It warned that if the hospital stops working, these thousands will be deprived of medical services due to the lack of security in the vicinity and campus of the hospital, and confirmed the continuation of the strike and the closure of the hospital until further notice.
