The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi, called for urgent and additional support to meet the needs of about 8 million IDPs as a result of the bloody conflict in Sudan.
At the conclusion of his visit to Ethiopia, Grandi was briefed on the efforts of the Ethiopian government, with the support of UNHCR and its partners, to help Sudanese refugees who recently arrived in the country.
Grandi said in a statement today (Wednesday): “I heard stories of heartbreaking losses of family members, friends, homes and livelihoods, but in the midst of this state of despair, I also saw the determination of refugees to move forward, if they have support and opportunities.”
He expressed his appreciation to the government and local communities for allocating land to those forced to flee and welcoming them, despite the challenges they face, including hosting large numbers of refugees.
He added: “Ethiopia’s continued generosity towards refugees, including those recently arrived from Sudan, is commendable and should be matched by greater support from the international community.
Without more supporting of donors it will be extremely difficult to provide much-needed assistance. For those who need it most.”
