European Union: Sudan is Epicenter of Largest Displacement Crisis in the World

The European Union said it was horrified by the unprecedented disaster resulting from the April 15 war in Sudan.
In a statement, the European Union urged the warring parties for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, as well as the establishment of monitoring mechanisms.
“The scale of the conflict shows that silencing the weapons is vital to stopping the devastation being inflicted on the Sudanese people and the country,” he said. He stressed that the European Union continues to support regional and international mediation efforts, stressing the importance of coordination and cohesion to bring peace to Sudan.
He added, “Sudan is now the epicenter of the largest displacement crisis in the world, within Sudan and neighboring countries, especially women and children. Millions are fleeing due to the horrific onslaught caused by the warring parties, including ethnic cleansing, indiscriminate bombing, sexual violence, human trafficking, arbitrary detention, forced recruitment and looting. In addition to “The country is currently facing the worst level of hunger ever recorded, affecting half of its total population, with a real risk of millions being pushed into famine during the coming drought season.”
He added, “The European Union reminds the warring parties of their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians. Denying access to food, health care and relief materials is a clear violation of international law, and may constitute war crimes. The warring parties must respect their mutually agreed obligations in Jeddah to provide immediate access.” “Full, safe and unhindered access to life-saving humanitarian assistance, especially across front lines and across borders, and deliveries and life-saving operations must be free of bureaucratic and administrative barriers.”
He stressed that the large contributions from the European Union and its member states represent a third of the total humanitarian response in 2023.
He said, “In order to respond to the growing needs of the Sudanese people and give Sudan the attention it deserves, France, Germany and the European Union will work together to: chair the International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and neighboring countries in Paris on April 15.”
The European Union stressed that it will do its utmost, in working with international mechanisms, until all responsible actors are identified and held accountable for the atrocities they have committed and continue to commit.
The European Union indicated that it had adopted a first set of restrictive measures, and was ready to continue using its tools in order to contribute to ending the armed conflict, discouraging the obstruction of humanitarian aid, and stopping the culture of impunity.
The European Union called on all countries that supply the warring parties with weapons and funds to immediately stop their support.
He continued, “The people of Sudan deserve freedom, peace and justice, which is what they have aspired to since the beginning of their revolution in 2019.”
