More than half of displaced Sudanese are women and girls, raising concerns that they are at risk of gender-based violence, UN Women said.
The UN said, in a statement, “53% of the internally displaced are women and girls, and there is a growing risk that the violence will soon create the largest hunger crisis in the world, and more than 7,000 new mothers may die in the coming months if their nutritional and health needs are not met.” .”
She noted that 6.7 million people are at risk of gender-based violence, and reports said intimate partner violence, sexual exploitation and abuse, and human trafficking are widespread and increasing.
The Fund stressed that the despicable use of sexual violence as a tactic of war further exacerbates the crisis with reports of rape, enslavement and murder, especially in Darfur, Kordofan and Khartoum.
He revealed that families facing food insecurity resort to marrying off their young daughters, as the lack of protection exacerbates shock and exposure to gender-based violence, leaving women and girls in a state of fear without adequate support or justice.
