Sudan Events – Agencies
UN officials have stressed the need for the international community to press for peace in Sudan, access to humanitarian aid, and financing the delivery of that aid.
Filippo Grandi, the High Commissioner for Refugees, Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs, Cindy McCain, Executive Director of the World Food Program, and Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, wrote a joint article published by the Al Jazeera English website.
They described the current situation as a humanitarian catastrophe involving horrific and terrified violations against civilians, including indiscriminate killing, ethnically motivated killing, and sexual violence against women and girls, and causing a displacement crisis for millions of residents internally and externally, which is the fastest displacement in the world to date, and with the emergence of a great danger that the largest hunger crisis in the world, and other tragedies will soon strike the region.
