Washington: We Are Concerned about the UAE’s Support for RSF Militia

Sudan Events – Agencies

The US special envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, said that Iran and the UAE, through the support they provide to the parties to the conflict, have become complicit in the violations committed against the Sudanese.

He added, according to (Sudan Tribune), “Any country that continues to provide material support to both sides of the conflict bears responsibility for fueling atrocities against the Sudanese people and the desperate humanitarian situation associated with them, so supplying the warring parties with weapons must be stopped.”

Perriello said that his country is concerned about reports that the UAE is providing financial support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as this matter has been raised directly with Emirati officials.

He continued: “We explained to them that providing weapons to either party to the conflict by any country leads to deepening the conflict and prolonging its duration.”

Perriello said that he does not plan to visit Port Sudan, but added: “Such a visit will likely focus on supporting the United States to end the conflict, ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid, and restore civilian rule.”

He pointed out that his country supports the transition to civilian rule in Sudan, with the army having no role in running the country, as we work closely with regional and international partners to support comprehensive civil dialogues owned and led by Sudanese to address issues of transition, governance, and resuming democratic transformation.

The US Special Envoy said that he supports the Jeddah Platform as the most feasible path towards a lasting peace agreement in Sudan, as we cooperate with influential regional actors to bring the warring parties together and end the conflict.

Perriello stressed that he “believes that the best platform for negotiations is the one hosted by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah, with the participation of the main partners.”

He said that the US administration had taken additional steps to accelerate the end of the war, saying, “Our participation aims to ensure the commitment of all parties to participate in the negotiation and to proactively address any potential obstacles.”
