The women and children’s official at the “Qurm” camp for Sudanese refugees in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, said that there were 50 abortions that occurred in the camp during a year, in addition to the presence of large numbers of girls who were raped during the war and in dire need of psychological treatment.
On Wednesday, the Humanitarian Affairs Commission in Juba and the Al-Kibulan Association recorded a visit to the Qurm camp, located southwest of Juba, to find out the conditions of the Sudanese there, as the camp includes more than 7,000 refugees, including 4,000 women.
The meeting, which included the Deputy Commissioner-General for Humanitarian Affairs, John Dabi, the Secretary-General of the Al-Kibulan Association, Balla Karrar, and the Executive Committee of Qurm Camp, discussed how to improve services in the camp, especially the health and nutritional aspects, by focusing on how to provide safe drinking water and the necessary services related to health and education.
The official for women and children in the camp’s executive committee, Bodour Al-Tijani, reported that there are shortcomings in the health aspects, including the lack of medical staff and the lack of medicine, and she stressed that the most affected by this situation are women and children.
She stated during the meeting that “there were 50 cases of abortion that the camp witnessed during this year due to lack of follow-up with doctors and lack of adequate access to food.” She confirmed the reception of 10 newborn babies.
The official highlighted the urgent need for psychological treatments because the camp includes a large number of girls who were raped in war zones before arriving in South Sudan.
