A hidden conflict re-emergres between Ahmed Kosti and Iman Al-Sharif, The artist, the poet, and the composer… Who created the other?

Sudan Events – Magda Hassan

A hidden conflict has begun to emerge into the open between the artist Iman Al-Sharif and the poet and composer Ahmed Kosti. It appears to be an old, renewed conflict, linked to literary and material rights. This raises the question of who made the other, whether the poet made the singer or the singer is the one revealed the poet and composer.

Muffled disagreement

It began with a tweet in which the poet and composer Ahmed Kosti celebrated his success, “Success stems from persistence and continuous effort. It is the achievement of goals after a long journey of challenges. Every successful step brings us closer to achieving our dreams. I am pleased that the song (Wilaid Min Al-Shukriya), which I wrote its words and melody have ranked No. 35 on the list of the 50 best Arabic songs of the twenty-first century, and this is an opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude to God.” He said.
The response came quickly and decisively from the singer Iman, “You wrote and composed your right, but Adel Hassan has a role in the implementation and distribution. Thanks to him as well, and thanks to Iman Al-Sharif, you transcend her name, and thanks to the people, if it was not for them, the song would not have been No. 35, with all due respect.” She responded.

Successful duets

The duet between Iman Al-Sharif and Ahmed Kosti is considered one of the most successful artistic duets in recent times. Despite the difference and similarity between the singer Nada Al-Qalaa and the poet and composer Haitham Abbas, the duet is successful to this day. The different lyrical areas that Iman plays on have clearly contributed to her development. In the front lines of stardom, she is the same one whose path is being followed by Kosti, and this may be the direct reason for their joint success.
Some believe that success is 90% for the singer because she has an audience that believes in her and listens to her regardless of the work of the poet, in addition to the fact that the poet receives his moral and material rights to the song whether it succeeds or not.

Reasons of success

The disagreement as a whole leads to the question: Which is more important in making a song? What are the reasons for the success of the song? The answer necessarily depends on the individual’s preferences and musical culture. The poet brings the words and meanings, the singer expresses them with their performance, and the composer creates the music that enhances the song. Therefore, it can be said that each of them plays an important role in the song, but the importance of each of them can change according to the context and individual tastes. At the recording level, the song’s player and arranger can also contribute to its success by providing an elaborate and influential musical performance that enhances the aesthetics of the song and adds its artistic value. In general, it can be said that the song’s performer and arranger plays an important role in achieving its success by highlighting musical skills and adding a special artistic touch that attracts attention and makes the song stand out among other works.

Binaries and courts

Earlier, the poet Ishaq Al-Halnaqi withdrew all of his songs sung by the musical artist Muhammad Al-Amin, and deprived him of repeating them in all media outlets, as Al-Halnaqi was aggrieved that Muhammad Al-Amin had been repeating these songs for (40) years without taking into account his material and moral rights, even though the singer Muhammad Al-Amin has an old duet with the poet Ishaq Al-Halnaqi, and sings for Al-Halnaqi with timeless songs: (Btita’lam Min Alayam),🛑 (Shal Al-Nawar) and (Ghorba Wu Shoug).
This dispute over “material rights” brings to mind the dispute that occurred previously, between the poet and playwright Hashem Siddiq, on the one hand, and the artists Muhammad Al-Amin and Abu Araki Al-Bakhit.

Disagreements throughout the ages

You may notice the outbreak of such disputes among composers and poets on the one hand, and singers, and this was evident, for example, in the departure of musician Othman Al-Naw from the “Iqd Al-Jalad” group and his sending a legal warning to withdraw more than thirty songs he had completed for the group after he formed the “Ray” singing group. Also, the late musician “Bashir Abbas” asked Al-Balabil not to sing all the works he presented to them. The artistic community was also shocked before by the dispute between the singer Muhammad Mirghani and the poet Atijani Haj Moussa, and even the new generations of singers and composers were pursued by disputes over financial rights between them.

Made by others

Historically, this dispute over “rights” continued to be renewed with each generation, sometimes reaching the courts, and sometimes being resolved through the Ajaweed. The seventies witnessed a sharp dispute between the late Muhammad Wardi and Ismail Hassan. Ismail Hassan stated in the newspapers that he was the one who created Muhammad Wardi and was the reason for his stardom. With his poetry, then they quarreled and debated through newspapers.
