Sudanese journalist and actress Nemat Hammad passed away on Wednesday in London.
The late woman is considered one of the pioneers of dramatic work in Sudan.
The dramatic community, through various media, mourned her with a lavish biography, as did the Sudanese Artists Association in Egypt. Critic Al-Sir Al-Sayyid said that the actress, writer, and director Nemat Hammad “took a rugged mountainous journey in order for Sudanese women to have a presence in art and what art? The art of drama.” The critic Al-Sir Al-Sayyid had devoted an article to her in his book On the Horizon of Questioning (Theatremakers and Issues), “Many Arab and European countries honored me, but I was waiting for my family to honor me, so I was always sad, even though the honor in itself is happy, but it will definitely not be beautiful enough if others honor you and your family forgets you and you.” She said.

Biography:

Nemat Hammad, a Sudanese actress, was born in the city of Kosti in the 1940s. Her father is Sheikh Hammad Ahmed Al-Fadani. Nemat began to enter the world of journalism and worked as a collaborator with “Al-Sabah Al-Jadeed” magazine in the section on rural women due to her knowledge and experience and because she is from the White Nile, then the radio magazine “Hana Omdurman,” then the non-print “Al-Majd” magazine, then “Al-Nas” magazine, and her contribution at that time she was older than her age, as she interviewed Dr. Aisha Bint Al-Shati, and she interviewed the American ambassador in Khartoum. This was in the sixties, and it took place in the office of the Minister of Information. Since the Minister of Foreign Affairs was present there, she was given the opportunity to meet the American ambassador, and he even offered her to go to America to study, but she preferred “Omdurman Radio” because she felt that the political situation in Sudan, especially at that time, needed the efforts of its people, especially women, because they were the best support in issues of awareness, education and social change.

She was the first woman to appear on Sudanese television, and the first woman to hear the word “action” through the drama program “Sheikh Ahmed’s Family” with Hassan Abdel Majeed, Ahmed Atef, Awad Siddiq and Al-Sir Qaddour. She also participated in the Ramadan competitions that were broadcast live, but The greatest work I presented was the play “Al-Raqaba”, which was directed by Al-Shafi’ Al-Daw. I also recorded “The Monkey’s Finger” with artist Makki Sinada and director Ahmed Atef, which is part of world literature.

Contributions of prominent figures

Nemat entered the radio and found there the actresses Nafisa Ahmed Mahmoud, Munira Abdel Majed, Fatima Abdel Mahmoud, Fawzia Youssef Saleh, Bakhita Amin and others. On the radio, she participated in most of the radio skits, especially the cooperation programs that Kamal Mahmoud, the lawyer, was preparing. It is mentioned that he was the first to introduce her to the microphone. She also participated in the professor’s skits. Hassan Abdel Majeed, and she starred in Hamdna Allah Abdel Qader’s masterpiece, “Corner Kiosk,” in which she shared the lead with actor Mekki Sinada. Nemat met the late actor Al-Fadel Saeed, and her first participation with him was in the Al-Mawlid Theater in Khartoum. Through his troupe, he toured all the cities of Sudan, and at the beginning of Al-Faki Abdel-Rahman’s theatrical seasons, I participated in the plays “The Whirlwind” – Hassan Al-Bayahah – Tajuj – Al-Shamasha – The Fall of Bar Lev – Bamska – Abu Fanous.

The late woman wrote and directed the play “The Curse of the Flyer,” then the play “Rain and Harvest,” and the play “A Visit from the Undertaker Team,” which was presented at the Youth and Children’s Theater, in addition to her Sudanization of the play “Bride on Demand,” in addition to presenting the dancing giraffe show in England, and completed a film about “female circumcision.”
Nemat married the well-known artist Al-Tayeb Abdullah in 1967, and said about her marriage that she lived a happy marriage. This marriage resulted in Tariq, a doctor residing in Britain, and Elham, a doctor specialized in bacteria.
