On Friday, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, warned of the escalation of violence in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, warning of a humanitarian catastrophe.
Volker Turk said he was “appalled” by the escalation of violence near the city of El Fasher, adding that he held discussions this week with two leaders from both sides of the conflict, warning of a humanitarian catastrophe if the city was attacked.
Turk warned that the fighting in El Fasher would have a “catastrophic impact on civilians” and would exacerbate the situation.
As the fighting worsens, the humanitarian conditions in the city, in which more than a million and a half residents and displaced people, deteriorate, amid fears of a severe shortage of food and health services.
